My name is Michael Matthews. I am a bankruptcy lawyer practicing in the Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton County areas. While I represent individuals located in South Carolina, the majority of my clients reside in Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, St. Helena, Lady’s Island, Walterboro, Charleston, Ridgeland, Sun City and surrounding areas. My bankruptcy practice concentrates on Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases.
I believe that financial pressure can be one of the most debilitating pressures one can experience. It can come from a variety of sources–lost job, reduction of income, illness, divorce, etc.
Often times those experiencing financial pressure simply need someone to assure them that things can get better and assist them in resolving their financial issue(s) to get to that better place. In my view, there is great reward in helping others resolve the financial burdens that have been carried too long. Knowing that someone can sleep again and begin to live life without the weight of the world on their shoulders is rewarding beyond description. In the bankruptcy “world” we call that a FREST START. If I can play a small role to help accomplish that, I am happy to do to so. That is why many of my clients are referrals from other clients that I have represented in a bankruptcy.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, I owned businesses that I started in my early 20’s and owned for many years. Prior to that, I managed, at the time, one of the world’s largest golf manufacturing companies. As a result, I have a unique business background which enables me to understand the fluidity, challenges, and stresses of business ownership which my business clients appreciate.
After selling my businesses, I decided to attend law school in Michigan (it was one of the only things left on my life “to do list”). While there I also clerked for a Senior Federal Judge. Working for the Federal Judge gave me a unique look into the inner workings of the federal court and judicial chambers which has proven to be an invaluable experience.
I have had and continue to have a unique and successful professional life. Additionally, I have a wonderful wife, and son. Both make me proud and happy everyday.
